What is Parts Work?
Parts Work is a therapeutic approach based on the idea that we experience many different parts of ourselves that show up as aspects of our personality and inner world. Our various parts hold different experiences, beliefs, feelings, and desires, which may sometimes be in contradiction to other parts.
Some parts may focus on protecting you from harm, others on achieving your goals, and some might hold past traumas or emotional pain. When these parts work together harmoniously it feels like inner peace. When they’re in conflict or misunderstood it can lead to inner turmoil, stress, or confusion.
Working together
Working to understand our different parts, their intentions and needs can support a sense of healing, emotional balance, self-compassion and wellbeing.
I draw on a number of different models here including IFS (Internal Family Systems), Bonnie Badenoch’s work around our inner community and Inner Relational Focussing. Parts Work can be especially helpful for people who have experienced trauma, anxiety, self-criticism, self-doubt or emotional struggles.
