Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)
What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a therapeutic auditory intervention developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, based on his Polyvagal Theory. The five hour core program is designed to reduce stress, support emotional well-being, reduce auditory sensitivity and foster social engagement. It can also develop increased resilience and an increased sense of safety.
By targeting the auditory pathways with specially filtered music, the SSP supports increased regulation of the body’s physiological and emotional states, improving overall wellbeing and therapeutic outcomes.
The Safe & Sound Protocol is recognised for its potential to improve emotional and social functioning, providing a valuable tool for those seeking to enhance their emotional wellbeing and interpersonal interactions.
Working together
I have been using the SSP for the last 6 years to support children , young people and adults. The SSP may not be suitable for everyone. For some people, it is recommended to use the SSP alongside ongoing therapy for additional support.
Before beginning with the SSP we will work to understand your nervous system and current situation to asses if the intervention is right for you or if some nervous system support is needed prior to starting the protocol. If the SSP is suitable, we will work together to identify the pace needed for your personalised program.
Please be aware that the SSP often needs to be worked through within a therapeutic relationship initially. Co-regulation with a trained provider who understands how the nervous system works and can provide a safe environment is needed to support the benefits seen from the protocol.
Providing some psychoeducation will be part of the intervention to support your understanding of how your own system is responding to the music and, in turn, support appropriate adjustments to your personalised programme.
